Vangipurappu Venkata Sai Laxman was born in Hyderabad on November 1, 1974, and played his first Test for India in 1996 against South Africa at Ahmedabad. However, some of his best performances came against Australia, whether in Australia or playing at home against them.

One of his earliest innings of note was his 167 as an opener in the Sydney Test of 2000. However, the innings he will be remembered for was the epic of 281 against Australia at the memorable Kolkata Test of the 2001 Border Gavaskar Trophy. He and Rahul Dravid batted the entire 4th day to avert a collapse and added a record 376 runs to set an epic win for India.

VVS Laxman also played 86 ODIs along with his 134 Tests, scoring 2338 and 8781 runs respectively with a total of 23 centuries in total. He also played for Deccan Chargers and Kochi Tuskers Kerala in the IPL from 2008-2011.

Today as he celebrates his 46th birthday, he received wishes from his peers and admirers in the cricket fraternity on Twitter.
