October 2, 2020 marks the 151st birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the day is celebrated in India as ‘Gandhi Jayanti’ – one of the three official National Holidays of India.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a lawyer and activist, had played a critical role in liberating India from the rule of British Raj. His non-violent movement against the British eventually led them to leave India.
Gandhi had first practiced non-violent resistance in South Africa, where he had gone to practice law and stayed for 21 years. He had protested there against the racial discrimination he faced and fought for civil rights of ethnic minorities.
After returning to India in 1915, Gandhi began organising protests in favour of indigo farmers and workers, who paid excessive land tax and faced discrimination in Champaran and Kheda satyagrah.
He took charge of the Indian National Congress in 1921 and led nationwide non-violent campaigns to speak against untouchability, poverty, discrimination of women and most importantly to help India gain the right of self-rule or Swaraj.
On this special day, Indian cricket fraternity also remembered the teachings of Gandhi on social media.
