As per legends, the festival is celebrated to commemorate King Mahabali, whose spirit is said to visit Kerala at the time of Onam.

This a major event for all the Malayali people in Kerala and outside the state. Onam, along with Vishu and Thiruvathira is one of the three major harvest festivals in the country.

Onam celebrations include Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (flower Rangoli), Onathappan (worship), Onam Kali, Tug of War, Thaumbi Thullal (women's dance), Kummattikali (mask dance), Onathallu (martial arts), Onavillu (music), Kazhchakkula (plantain offerings), Onapottan (costumes), Atthachamayam (folk songs and dance),

The festivities bring together people of all castes and religions and Onam is celebrated with all the joy and spirit by everyone.
