One of the best openers in the world and the first batsman to reach the 10,000-run milestone in Tests, India’s Sunil Gavaskar is celebrating his 71st birthday today. He was born on 10 July 1949 in Mumbai and made his India debut in 1971.
He played 125 Tests, scoring 10,122 runs with 34 centuries t0 his name and a best of 236* at an average of 51.10. He also played 108 ODIs, making 3092 runs with one century at an average of 35.1.
He was a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team and captained the team to 1985 World Championship of Cricket title in Australia.
Widely regarded as one of the masters of the game, Gavaskar retired from cricket in 1987 and turned his focus in broadcasting and is one of the revered figures in the world of commentary as well.
