One of the most flamboyant and courageous cricketers, Shastri was a staple in the Indian team through the 80s.

He made his Test debut in 1981 and retired from cricket in 1992, playing 80 Tests and 150 ODIs. He made 3830 Test runs with 11 centuries and 3108 ODI runs with 4 centuries to his name. He also picked 151 Test and 129 ODI wickets with his brilliant left-arm spin.

Shastri was blessed with a shrewd cricket mind and was part of the 1983 World Cup-winning Indian team and was the Player of the tournament when India won the 1985 Benson and Hedges World Series of Cricket in Australia. He won the then-latest Audi car as the prize.

After retiring from the game at the age of 30 due to recurring knee problems, Shastri turned to commentary and his style of relaying the action onto the field to the audience at home has made him a fan favorite. No one can forget his voice encapsulating the moment when MS Dhoni hit the six to win the 2011 World Cup final for India at the Wankhede Stadium.

He has also coached India since 2017 and India has done pretty well in terms of winning many bilateral series both home and away from home.

As he celebrates his 58th birthday amidst the lockdown due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the Indian cricketers sent across wishes to him on Twitter and we have some of the best for you.
