WATCH: ‘Once he is gone, there is no getting him back’ - Nasser Hussain against pushing Dhoni into retirement

The postponement of IPL 2020 has put MS Dhoni's cricket future in jeopardy.

MS Dhoni | GettyFormer England captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain has said that it is not wise to push MS Dhoni into retirement because once he is gone, you can't get him back.

Dhoni, who has been away from competitive cricket since India’s exit from the ICC World Cup last year, was set to lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL, in a bid to stake claim for a place in the national squad for T20 World Cup.

But now with IPL 2020 on the verge of being called off due to COVID-19 pandemic, his cricket future has once again become a major topic of discussion.

"Is Dhoni still good enough to get into the Indian side? It is as simple as that. That should apply for anyone across the board. What I have seen of Dhoni, I still think he has a huge amount to offer to Indian cricket. Yes, there have been one or two occasions where he has got it wrong in run-chases, like that World Cup game against England. But in general, Dhoni is still a really good talent,” Hussain said on a Star Sports show.

"And be careful what you wish for because once Dhoni is gone, there is no getting him back. There are some legends of the game who are once-in-a-generation cricketers. Don't push him into retirement early. Only Dhoni knows his mental state and in the end selectors select," he added.

Earlier, the Indian team management including head coach Ravi Shastri and the selectors had said they will wait and watch until IPL 2020 to take a call on Dhoni's return.

Dhoni did not feature in India's plans in the home season and the tour of New Zealand but the former India skipper began training in the lead up to IPL 2020. After taking to the nets at Ranchi, he landed in Chennai in the first week of March and trained extensively with a few of his CSK teammates, including Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu.
