The long-standing cricket rivalry between England and Australia was at its best in the historic and iconic and yet dramatic Ashes 2005 series – which has witnessed an equal amount of enthusiasm, controversy, on-field banters, wildness, hostility and of course the power-packed entertainment.
Players didn’t hesitate to cross the line in the greatest ever and a nerve-jangling series Ashes series, which England won by 2-1 against Ricky Ponting’s side at home in 2005.

During the famous Ashes 2005 series, former England pacer Steve Harmison’s furious and fast delivery left the former skipper Ponting with a bloodied cheek.
Recently, Ponting recalled the 2005 Ashes series after being nominated by the Australia batsman David Warner to share some of his greatest Ashes memories. He rated the unforgettable Ashes 2005 as one of the all-time great series of all time. The legendary captain has posted a video on Instagram on Wednesday (April 8) to talk about some of his greatest Ashes memories.
In the video, Ponting relieved the moment by saying: “It was my childhood dream to play some Ashes cricket. I have played in eight or nine Ashes series so there are some fond memories and then there are some which are not that fond memories.”

He added, “One such not so fond memory includes the 2005 Ashes series, where we were beaten by Michael Vaughan’s England. It was probably one of the all-time great series, Vaughan’s team was too good. We won the first Test at Lord’s, but then came the Edgbaston Test, it was one of the all-time great Tests and we came up short, then in the third Test we had to battle it out for a draw.”
Meanwhile, the Aussie legend also recalled the great gesture by Andrew Flintoff of consoling Brett Lee after England won a nail-biting second Ashes Test at Edgbaston, as he first met the Aussie and then celebrated England’s 2-run victory in the second Test match.
He said: “The fourth Test we ended up losing and England snuck up the line, and the fifth ended in a draw, and we ended up losing the Ashes. Unfortunately, we were not good enough. The everlasting image to come out of that series was that of Brett Lee and Andrew Flintoff down on one knee celebrating the end of a great Test match,”
Ponting signed off by saying, “After winning the match, Flintoff’s first gesture was to go up to Brett, they are the things I remember about Ashes cricket the most, we enjoyed playing hard on the pitch and so did Vaughan’s team in the 2005 series,”
