Today, November 12, 2019, marks the 550th birth anniversary of the first guru of Sikhism, Guru Nanak Dev. The founder of Sikhism was born on April 15, 1469, in Rai-Bhoi-di Talwandi in the present Sheikhupura District of Pakistan, now Nankana Sahib.
The Sikhs have been celebrating Guru Nanak Jayanti around November, as it is claimed that Guru Nanak was born on the Full Moon of the Indian Lunar Month Kartik. The day is a gazetted holiday in India.
This festival is one of the most revered and auspicious ones for followers of Sikhism. It is celebrated for three days and two days before the occasion, the Guru Granth Sahib is read continuously for 48 hours. Sikh worship places known as Gurudwaras prepare langars which are prepared and offered by the volunteers and devotees all over the world.
