Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan on Tuesday (October 29) was handed a two-year ban (one of which is suspended) as he failed to report multiple corrupt approaches made to him by a bookie.

Shakib, who has been found guilty of violating the ICC Anti-Corruption Code, was charged for not reporting approaches from an alleged Indian bookie twice during a tri-series between Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in January 2018 and once during IPL in April 2018.

As soon as the news broke out, people in the cricketing fraternity slammed Shakib for his irresponsible attitude towards corruption. In fact, former England captain Michael Vaughan expressed his disappointment through a tweet that the Bangladesh all-rounder escaped a severe punishment.

After he received some angry replies from Twitterati in his mentions, Vaughan further wrote: “For all you abusing I have zero tolerance for corruption .. It doesn’t matter what team you play for .. Players these days know exactly what they can and can’t do .. also know they have to report anything .. if they don’t they know the consequences ..”

Despite his clarification, Vaughan continued to face the wrath of Bangladeshi fans. However, when things went a bit overboard, the 2005 Ashes winning skipper indulged in war of words on Wednesday (October 30).

Shakib, 32, can resume his international cricket only from October 29, 2020, meaning his participation in next year’s T20 World Cup is all but over. The marquee event will be held in Australia from October 8 to November 15.
