Today, October 8, marks the holy occasion of Dussehra or Vijayadashami. Dussehra is a major Hindu festival celebrated all over the world and is observed on the tenth day in the Hindu calendar month of Ashvin.
It is celebrated for different reasons all over the Indian subcontinent. In the southern, eastern and northeastern states of India, Vijayadashami marks the end of Durga Puja, remembering goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. In Northern India, it is celebrated to mark the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. It is celebrated by burning the towering effigies of Ravana symbolizing that evil is burnt with fireworks marking evil's destruction.
Dussehra also marks the beginning of the preparation of the biggest Hindu festival of Diwali.
