June 25th remains a special date in Indian Cricket. It is the day when Kapil Dev's men made the country proud by winning the 1983 World Cup in UK against all odds, beating favourites West Indies, Australia, England on way towards the final before defeating the mighty Calypso Kings again in the summit-clash at the Home of Cricket Lord's.

Batting first on a tough wicket against a bowling attack featuring Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall, Michael Holding, India somehow managed to post 183/10 in 54.4 overs on the back of Kris Srikkanth's 38 and twenties from Mohinder Amarnath (26) and Sandeep Patil (27).

The team pulled off a remarkable heist in the second half by dismissing a great batting line-up that had big names such as Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Sir Viv Richards, Clive Lloyd for only 140  in 52 overs.

Balwinder Sandhu (2/32), Madan Lal (3/31), Roger Binny (1/23), Mohinder Amarnath (3/12), Kapil Dev (1/21) delivered fantastic spells.

Kapil led his team from the front. He captained inspirationally, bowled really well throughout the tournament, stepped up with a legendary 175 in the virtual knock-out with Zimbabwe, and then took that famous catch to help dismiss the great Vivian Richards in the final.

Inarguably country's greatest ever cricketer tallied 303 runs at an average of 60.60 and scalped 12 wickets in 8 matches. He is deservingly celebrated till date.

The 1983 World Cup victory inspired a generation of Indian cricketers to take up the sport, no less than a 10-year-old Sachin Tendulkar, who dreamt of lifting that trophy himself someday, immediately started playing cricket and remains the game's highest run-getter in Tests and ODIs even after his retirement in 2013.

Hence, that win remains special to many and was rightfully celebrated even today amidst Indian Cricket fraternity over social media.
