Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has strongly advocated for Mohammad Shami’s return to the national team, insisting the fit-again pacer should bowl alongside Jasprit Bumrah.

Citing his excellent domestic form, Ganguly highlighted Shami's 2026 IPL performance as proof of his readiness.

The veteran right-arm quick has made a stellar start to the season with LSG, following his transfer from SRH. He produced a match-winning spell of 2/9 in 4 overs against SRH, including 18 dot balls, after earlier recording a 1/28 spell in the campaign opener against DC

"He should be bowling at the other end of Bumrah, nowhere else. That's how good he is. We all saw that spell the other night against Sunrisers Hyderabad - four overs, nine runs against two of the best T20 players, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma. That was phenomenal," Ganguly said in a video shared by RevSportz on X.

"He had a strong Ranji Trophy season for Bengal. I still remember that semifinal - even though Bengal lost, he picked up eight wickets. He was instrumental in taking the team that far.

"I'm very happy that he wants to continue playing in the Ranji Trophy. It's tough for a fast bowler, but there's nothing better than watching Mohammad Shami run in with the new ball," Ganguly added.

Sourav Ganguly described Shami as "fit and sharp", reiterating his wish to see him in India colours.

"I still believe he should play for India. Hopefully, his time will come again because he's that good. When the ball comes out with that upright seam, it's a treat to watch.

"He looks fit and sharp. After bowling consistently for months, you naturally get into peak condition - no training matches that. I wish him all the best and would love to see him back in India colours."

Mohammad Shami has been overlooked by national selectors despite consistent performances in domestic cricket, including 37 wickets in the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy. His last appearance for India was in the Champions Trophy final on March 9, 2025.
