India batter Rinku Singh experienced personal bereavement as his father, Khanchand Singh, passed away on Friday, February 27, 2026, after a battle with cancer. Rinku, who is presently with the team for the T20 World Cup, came to see him before the match against Zimbabwe.
Khanchand was undergoing treatment for cancer at the Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida after his condition worsened this week. However, his condition did not improve, and he had to be placed on ventilator support.
Rinku returned in time for the Zimbabwe match in Chennai, but was replaced by Sanju Samson. However, he did appear in the game as a substitute fielder.
Rinku's father was a strong supporter of the Indian cricketer throughout his career. He used to work as an LPG cylinder deliveryman in Aligarh, and despite his financial limits, he made sure Rinku had every opportunity to succeed as a cricketer.
The Indian cricket team will now travel to Kolkata for their final Super Eight match against the West Indies. The match will be a virtual quarterfinal, with the victor advancing to the semifinals after India overcame Zimbabwe, and the West Indies suffered a severe loss to South Africa.
