Former Pakistan skipper Imran Khan has reportedly been in near-virtual solitary confinement in prison for quite a few months.
According to recent media reports, the cricketer-turned-politician has developed an eye infection which, his legal team claims, has led to severe vision loss and raised fresh concerns about his health.
Responding to the reports of Khan’s deteriorating eyesight, former Pakistan pacers Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis have urged the authorities for a proper medical treatment in custody.
“It is heartbreaking to hear our skipper Imran Khan going through health issues," Wasim wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “I sincerely hope the authorities take this seriously and ensure he receives the best possible medical care. Wishing him strength, a speedy recovery, and a full return to good health."
Waqar echoed similar sentiments soon after as he posted on X: “Putting politics aside, our national hero who gave us our greatest glory on the sporting field, and built a cancer hospital that helped so many — including my own mother — is facing a health emergency and requires urgent treatment. I humbly request that the concerned authorities to ensure he gets appropriate care in time. Get well soon, skipper."
Besides Akram and Younis, former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar also hoped that Imran Khan gets best treatment, even in jail. "I'm deeply saddened to hear the news of him losing vision in his eye. I hope he gets the best treatment and I'm wishing him a speedy recovery," Akhtar said.
Ex-captain Shahid Afridi voiced concern about Imran's health, stating that right to medical access was a "basic right and should be provisioned". Former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja hoped "humanity prevails", before adding: "Seeing Imran Khan suffer and lose vision in one eye is an emotional meltdown!"
In a latest development, Imran Khan will undergo treatment for an eye condition at a specialized medical facility, a Cabinet minister said Saturday, reported by news agency Associated Press.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar wrote on X that an examination would be carried out by leading ophthalmologists as part of Imran's ongoing treatment. The minister did not divulge at which medical facility and when Imran would be treated.
