Jamie Smith was the center of the limelight as he was controversially given out by the TV umpire in England’s second innings of the ongoing first Ashes 2025-26 Test in Perth against Australia.

England was bowled out for 164 runs in the second innings, despite being 65/1 at one stage. Ollie Pope scored 33, while Gus Atkinson scored 37 runs. Scott Boland took 4/33, while Mitchell Starc and Brendan Doggett took three wickets each.

The focus of England’s second innings was on Jamie Smith’s dismissal. The incident happened on the first ball of the 28th over of the England innings. Jamie Smith attempted to glance a ball from Brendan Doggett that was moving down leg; he was called not out by the field umpire, and the decision was reviewed by the Australians.

The TV umpire reviewed the dismissal for a long time, and Jamie Smith was eventually given out caught behind. Jamie Smith had begun to walk away before coming back and seeing the big screen for the replays.

The snicko revealed a slight blip, but the timing did not match the frame of the ball that passed Smith's bat. However, the ball may have simply been diverted. England fans, on the other hand, will undoubtedly be disappointed with the third umpire's decision.

Former ICC umpire Simon Taufel explained the decision and agreed with the TV umpire’s decision.

“The conclusive evidence protocols with RTS—if you get a spike up to one frame past the bat, that is conclusive. And in this particular case, that is exactly what was there. Unfortunately, he didn't want to pull the trigger quite as quickly as perhaps he could have or should have.

And the guys in the truck were doing their utmost to show him and to slow it down and to try rocking and rolling that frame. For me, the correct decision was made. A spike RTS after one frame past the bat, the batter has got to go,” Taufel was quoted by 7Cricket.

Set 205 runs to win, Australia decided to go on offense and sent Travis Head to open the innings with Jake Weatherald, and Head hammered the England bowlers to all parts of the Perth stadium as he raced off to a 69-ball century with 12 fours and 4 sixes.
