Steve Smith captained the New South Wales team for the first time in eight years against Victoria in their Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Smith is also set to captain Australia in the first Test of the Ashes 2025 against England at Perth.
Smith has been in good form, having scored a century on his Sheffield Shield return, and fans have rejoiced in his form with the bat. However, they might be concerned with one area where Smith seemed to struggle.
On Monday, when Smith was set to toss the coin, he utterly failed at the job. The coin barely rose before crashing onto the ground. Victoria skipper Will Sutherland won the toss and opted to bat first.
“Look at that! I think he needs practice tossing the coin. That was a shocker. That didn’t get above hip height," quipped a commentator.
“He has almost thrown that into the ground," said another.

Smith will lead Australia in the absence of Pat Cummins in Perth, having filled in for the pacer six times since being named the vice-captain of the Test team after 2022. The first Ashes Test begins on November 21.
