The Indian women's cricket team, which won the ICC Women's World Cup, was welcomed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's home on Lok Kalyan Marg on Wednesday.
India finally broke the hoodoo of not winning the World Cup despite playing in two finals previously in 2005 and 2017, and defeated South Africa in the summit clash on November 2 in Navi Mumbai to become world champions.
During the conversation, PM Narendra Modi asked the Indian captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, why she pocketed the match ball after India won the World Cup final. As Nadine de Klerk's uppish drive off Deepti Sharma flew toward cover, Harmanpreet leapt, clutched the ball, and sealed India's first-ever Women's ODI World Cup victory.
Among the festivities, she gently slipped the ball into her pocket, a memento from a night that will live on in Indian sporting history.
“Harman, after winning, you kept the ball in your pocket," PM Modi asked. “I still have it," Harmanpreet replied.
Narendra Modi asked the Indian captain, “What was the reason? Did someone tell you? What happened?"
She replied: “No, sir. It was God’s plan. It was not like I will get the last ball. But, I got that ball. After so many years of hard work, after so many years of waiting, now I have it. I still have it in my bag."
