The end of Day 3 of the second and final Test match of the series between Pakistan and South Africa saw a dramatic finish shortly after the final delivery was bowled.  

On Wednesday, wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan inexplicably dislodged the bails, prompting the visitors to request a hit-wicket at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. However, the umpires showed no interest in listening to the South African players, frustrating keeper Kyle Verreynne.

Keshav Maharaj delivered the final delivery of the day to Mohammad Rizwan. Rizwan hit the ball to the fielder at extra cover from a floating fuller delivery outside off. Rizwan immediately removed the bails with his bat and began strolling towards the dressing room.

The sight prompted an appeal from Verreynne, who was the first to notice it, before being joined by his teammates. The keeper even approached the on-field umpire, Sharfuddoula, and was seen having an impassioned conversation, but the match official paid little attention to it.

Later replays revealed that when Rizwan had removed the bails, the fielder had not tossed the ball back into play, suggesting that South Africa's appeal was valid. Rizwan was safe, though, because it appeared that the umpire had already ruled the game "over" before anything happened.

MCC Law 35.2, regarding hit-wicket dismissals, states that a batter will not be given out if:

- It occurs after the striker has completed any action in receiving the delivery, other than in 35.1.1.2 to 35.1.1.4.

- It occurs when the striker is in the act of running, other than setting off immediately for the first run.

- It occurs when the striker is trying to avoid being run out or stumped.

- It occurs when the striker is trying to avoid a throw-in at any time.

- The bowler, after entering the delivery stride, does not deliver the ball. In these cases, either umpire shall immediately call and signal Dead ball. See Law 20.4 (Umpire calling and signalling Dead ball).

-The delivery is a no-ball.

In Rizwan's example, he did not try to take a single after hitting the ball towards cover and instead dislodged the bails as he was leaving. This did not fall within Law 35's hit-wicket scenarios because it happened after he finished his shot and without any additional batting or running movement.  

A batter cannot be dismissed under Law 35.2 if the stumps break after the delivery is played. Thus, even though the ball was still in play, Rizwan was appropriately declared not out.
