The frenzy around Babar Azam peaked on Day 1 of Pakistan's first Test against South Africa at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, with even ex-South Africa captain Shaun Pollock caught up in the euphoria.

The former Proteas all-rounder and captain incorrectly referred to Pakistan captain Shan Masood as the "captain of India" while discussing how the audience wanted the left-handed batsman to be removed so that Babar could take the crease.

Several spectators at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium were seen brandishing 'King Babar' posters as they awaited the former Pakistan captain's return. Babar did not make Pakistan's Asia Cup 2025 squad, and this was his first appearance in international cricket since the three-match ODI series against the West Indies.

The spectators at the Gaddafi Stadium had to wait quite a while to see Babar after Masood and Imam-ul-Haq put on 161 runs for the second wicket. However, the wait came to an end when Masood (76) was bowled by Prenelan Subrayen in the 48th over, sending Babar to the crease.

As soon as the former Pakistan captain entered the crease, the supporters erupted in chants of "Babar, Babar." However, it is worth noting that before Masood's wicket, the crowd roared every time South African bowlers made an appeal.

One such incident caught Pollock's attention in the 40th over, and it was then that he mistakenly referred to Masood as “captain of India.”

“I can't believe they would want Shan Masood, the captain of India, to be out just to get Babar to the crease. Think we need to have a word with these supporters,” said Pollock on air.  

In the first test between Pakistan and South Africa, the hosts won the toss and decided to bat first. The team got off to a horrible start, losing opening batsman Abdullah Shafique in the first over, bowled by Kagiso Rabada.

Imam Ul Haq made 93 runs, and Shan Masood made 76 runs, adding 161 runs for the second wicket. Babar Azam remained unbeaten on 23 as tea was taken on day one.
