Former South Africa captain Faf du Plessis talked about his relationship with ex-Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star Virat Kohli. He called him very astute when it comes to fashion and revealed that he had a huge watch collection.
Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli shared a healthy rivalry when they played for South Africa and India respectively, while they got to know each other well when Du Plessis joined RCB in IPL 2022 and led them for three seasons.
Faf and Kohli formed an incredible batting partnership, scoring over 2,000 runs at an average of 49.56, including six century stands and nine half-century stands.
"We both enjoy fashion. He's a massive watch guy. I've said to him that he's the most expensive friend I've ever met. He made my wallet a lot thinner in terms of the watches he showed me in his collection. But even off the field, be it at the gym or in what he ate, he was always at 100%,” Faf said on Prakhar Gupta’s podcast.
With 9,336 runs at an average of 40.41 and a strike rate of almost 135 in 235 games, Kohli is the IPL's all-time top run scorer. The seasoned batter led the run-scoring charts when RCB won their two successive IPL championships in 2025 and 2026.
Virat Kohli is a humorous character off the field, according to Faf du Plessis, who said that having a family has made the renowned batsman softer. Kohli is well known for his intense play and fiery personality.
"He's actually quite playful off the field. The time I was with him in RCB was later in his career, with family and kids. Especially when you have kids, and a girl, it makes you soft jelly. So when our paths crossed in RCB, there was a softer edge to him, even though his personality didn't change.
His intensity really picked up the guys around him in the Indian team. That's something I definitely saw with Indian cricket. The level of intensity went up with him being the captain. There was a hardness around them, and you couldn't bully them because of the way he played the game,” Faf said.
Virat Kohli will be back in action when India takes on New Zealand in a series of five ODIs starting November 4.
