Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is proving his appointment as East Zone vice-captain right after he convinced Captain Ishan Kishan to take a DRS review, which proved to be the right decision in the ongoing Duleep Trophy 2026 final against South Zone.
South Zone faced an uphill battle to counter East Zone's massive first-innings total of 708 and got off to a rocky start when opener Ricky Bhui lost his wicket due to a brilliant call by Sooryavanshi.
Mukesh Kumar had Bhui nick one behind to wicketkeeper Kumar Kushagra in the sixth over of the innings. However, Kushagra and Sooryavanshi, who were positioned at slip, were convinced they had heard something, despite the umpire's apparent disinterest.
After persistent urging from Sooryavanshi, who could be heard saying, “Le lo, Le lo (Take it, take it)”, Ishan went for the review. UltraEdge showed a spike as the ball kissed the inside edge, and the decision was overturned.
“A wonderful catch by Kumar Kushagra. But if you need to take the review, you’ll have to go to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. Firstly, listen to what he has to say. Vaibhav could be heard telling Ishan Kishan on the stump mic, ‘I’m telling you, take it.' ' Take the review.’ Mukesh Kumar says thank you to Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. It’s because of him that they’ve taken the review,” the commentator said on air.
“Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ???? Review. The vice-captain urges the captain to take the review, and it turns out to be successful. "BCCI shared the video with this caption.
East Zone, after winning the toss and choosing to bat first, posted a massive 708 runs. Ishan Kishan starred with 270, while Kumar Kushagra made 101, Shikhar Mohan made 85, Abhimanyu Easwaran made 72, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made 44 runs.
In response, Devdutt Padikkal made 62 and Narayan Jagadeesan made 37, as the South Zone is 146/4 at the time of writing this piece.
