Former England cricketer Nasser Hussain slammed Pakistan wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan for avoiding responsibility and exposing the tailenders to England's pace bowlers during the recently concluded first Test at Headingley, Leeds.
Pakistan had made 171 runs in the first innings after being asked to bat first by England captain Joe Root, who won the toss. England made 409 runs in their first innings in reply.
Much was expected from Pakistan in their second innings, but only Mohammad Rizwan (41) and Shan Masood (29) managed substantial scores as they were bundled out for 135 runs in the second innings. Ollie Robinson, Josh Tongue, and Jofra Archer took three wickets for England.
With this, England won the game by an innings and 103 runs and went 1-0 up in the three-Test series.
During a passage of play towards the end, Mohammad Rizwan was batting with the tail and decided to expose Khurram Shahzad to Ollie Robinson after taking a single off the very first over of the ball. Robinson, who won the Player of the Match for his 8 wickets, wasted no time in dismissing the tail-ender.
Nasser Hussain, who was on commentary, was left stunned as Rizwan took a single off the first ball and gave strike to Shahzad. He also highlighted how Rizwan shirked responsibility despite being the senior batter and having played 46 Test matches for Pakistan.
“Bizarre cricket, bizarre cricket. When you're batting with a number nine, Rizwan has played 46 Test matches and is the senior batter out there, the only batter out there, so exposing the tail to five balls of Robinson's makes no sense. Excellent catching from England; Rizwan watches on from the non-striker's end,” he stated on commentary.
