Tilak Varma, the T20I vice-captain for Team India, blamed the difficult conditions in England and Ireland for the team's dismal back-to-back T20I series losses. He has insisted that the team is still committed to growing from the setbacks and regaining momentum.
In July 2026, the defending T20 World Cup champions had an unmemorable tour of the United Kingdom, winning just one of ten games while losing to Ireland in the T20I series and to England in the T20I and ODI series. India remained winless in the T20I portion of the visit and only achieved one victory in the ODI series.
After playing mostly in Asia for the previous two years, Tilak acknowledged that adjusting to foreign conditions proved to be a significant task. Additionally, he supported new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, emphasizing the value of remaining composed under duress and preserving a healthy atmosphere within the team.
"Honestly, Shreyas Iyer is leading a champion team, so obviously there's always responsibility. At the same time, Ireland and England offered completely different conditions. For the last two years, we've mostly been playing in Asia, and then suddenly we had to compete in overseas conditions against a very strong England side, whom we had already seen in the World Cup semi-final. Playing against such a quality team in challenging conditions was always going to be difficult, and naturally there were expectations as well," Tilak said in a video shared by the BCCI on X.
He further underlined that the team has drawn vital lessons from the tour and is keen to bounce back by building the proper attitude within the dressing room.
"In those situations, you have to remain calm under pressure and create positive energy within the team. That's our mindset. Results will go up and down, but what's important is how we build a good environment and back every individual. It's just a matter of one match or one series. The last series was a good learning experience, and now we want to execute those learnings and bring back the momentum," he added.
India’s tour of Zimbabwe will see them playing three T20Is on July 23, 25 and 26 in Harare.
