Earlier this month, the BCCI Men’s Selection Committee named Shreyas Iyer as the new Indian T20I captain. He will lead the squad in the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the 2026 Asian Games.
While Shreyas has not played a T20I for India since December 2023, his appointment is heavily backed by his stellar franchise captaincy. He led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to an IPL title in 2024 and guided the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final in 2025. He also enjoyed strong personal runs with the bat, amassing 498 runs in IPL 2026.
On the eve of his T20I captaincy debut against Ireland in Belfast, Shreyas Iyer updated his Instagram bio, leaving the fans curious.
'Second DOB: 25.12.2025,' his new Instagram bio read. Iyer’s latest activity triggered an intense online discussion, with fans speculating the reason behind it.
While there is no official confirmation as to why Iyer changed his bio, a fan pointed out that the date marks a major personal milestone as it is on this day he returned to the pitch after recovering from a spleen injury.
In October 2025, Shreyas Iyer suffered a severe spleen laceration during an ODI against Australia. This caused life-threatening internal bleeding and kept him sidelined for weeks.
By calling it his "Second Date of Birth," he is likely celebrating his recovery and a fresh start to his life and career.
Despite leading India to T20 World Cup title earlier this year, Suryakumar Yadav has been dropped from the national squad entirely following an extended dip in form.
While Shreyas takes over the T20I captaincy, Tilak Varma has been named his deputy. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had cited long-term planning and Iyer's stellar domestic and IPL record for giving him the leadership role.
India's T20I squads for Ireland and England tours: Shreyas Iyer (c), Tilak Varma (vc), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Shivam Dube, Suryansh Shedge, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Varun Chakaravarthy, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav
