SL v IND 2021: “What just happened,” asks Twitterverse after Suryakumar Yadav survives a DRS review

India was 147/3 in 23 overs when rains interrupted the 3rd ODI.

Suryakumar survived an insane DRS reviewIndia’s Suryakumar Yadav spent an agonizingly long time for a DRS review result which led to many of the cricket fraternity members asking what happened. The incident happened during the third ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo on July 23, 2021.

India captain Shikhar Dhawan finally won the toss and decided to bat first. The Men in Blue side saw five debuts in Sanju Samson, Nitish Rana, Rahul Chahar, Chetan Sakariya, and K Gowtham getting their India caps. Also included was Navdeep Saini in the playing XI.

Shikhar Dhawan fell for 13 runs, while Prithvi Shaw (49 with 8 fours) and Sanju Samson (46 with 5 fours and one six), lost their wickets just when it seemed like they were settling in for a long time. This left India at 118/3 in 19 overs.

Suryakumar Yadav then came out to join Manish Pandey and the Mumbai batsman looked at ease at the crease. He smacked his second ball for a boundary. But his innings could have been ended for 18 runs, had a DRS review not saved him.

On the 1st ball of the 23rd over bowled by Praveen Jayawickrama, Surya was hit low on his front leg while trying to sweep a straight ball. The bowler and the keeper appealed feverishly and the umpire decided to call in the favor of the bowler and gave Suryakumar out.

Surya consulted with Manish Pandey and opted for the DRS review. The review showed that the ball was hitting the stumps, but it has pitched outside off stump and the impact was also outside off. However, the impact was more than 2.5 meters down the ground and hence rendered the ball-tracking unreliable.

In the end, since the impact was outside the line of off-stump, despite the ball crashing into the stumps and Sri Lankan players celebrating, Suryakumar Yadav was given not out.

In all this melee, Suryakumar had already reached the boundary line as the ball was shown hitting the stumps, and Hardik Pandya, the next man in was about to enter the field. But when the DRS review resulted in Suryakumar being given not out, he had to walk back to his batting mark.

All this led to quite a bit of confusion for everyone and led to several fans and cricket fraternity members wondering what happened and shared the same feelings on Twitter.
