India and Sri Lanka engaged in the first ODI of the three-match series at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Both the teams featured a lot of new faces owing to different reasons and hence the match saw three ODI debuts in total.
Indian team is under the captaincy of Shikhar Dhawan and the guidance of Rahul Dravid as head coach as the first-choice team is in the UK for the five-match Test series against England. Hence BCCI has sent a young team full of players with potential, mixed with experienced white-ball players.
Many were speculating about who will make their debuts for India in the 1st ODI and it was revealed that Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav were handed their maiden ODI caps. Interestingly, both had made their T20I debuts together as well, earlier this year against England in Ahmedabad.
However, the debut was more special for Ishan Kishan, who on July 18, 2021, is celebrating his 23rd birthday as well. Kishan became only the second Indian to make his ODI debut on his birthday and 16th overall to do so. Gursharan Singh was the first Indian to do so, vs Australia in Hamilton in 1990.
BCCI shared a video of the ceremony in which both the players got their caps. Rahul Dravid, the coach is seen making an inspirational speech before Ishan Kishan gets his ODI cap from captain Shikhar Dhawan. Then vice-captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar presented Suryakumar Yadav with his ODI cap amidst applause from the India squad in the huddle.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka, who was making his debut as ODI skipper won the toss and chose to bat first.
