India's unfruitful tour of South Africa came to an end in disappointing fashion with a 4-run defeat in the final ODI at Newlands in Cape Town on Sunday (January 23). Ahead of the tour, the visitors were deemed favorites to win both the Test and ODI series but ended up losing both quite convincingly.
India started off the tour with a big win at Centurion in the first Test, but it all went downhill from there, as they went on to lose all five matches to follow, two Tests and three ODIs.
KL Rahul, who led India in the second Test with Virat Kohli unavailable due to a back spasm, and in the ODIs in the absence of white-ball captain Rohit Sharma, who missed the whole tour due to injury, not only failed to taste his first win as captain but also had a mixed bag tour as a batter after starting off promisingly with a fine hundred at Centurion.

After the conclusion of the tour, KL Rahul took to Instagram to pen a note for the disappointed Indian fans, as he wrote, "Difficult journeys help you improve and grow stronger. The results might not have gone our way, but we will learn from the mistakes. Leading the country was a great honour, a proud moment which cannot be described in words.
The work does not stop as we focus on getting better and never giving up. Thank you for your support."
