India lost the three-match series to South Africa after facing a defeat in the series decider by 7 wickets on Friday (January 14). They had started the series with a win in Centurion by 113 runs, but went on to lose the next two matches.

The series defeat has pushed India down to number 5 on the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 point table. They have featured in three Test series, which included 9 matches.

Virat Kohli and co have won 4 Test matches, lost 3, and drawn two. Two wins came against England, and one against New Zealand last year, before winning a match in South Africa.

India faced a deduction of 3 points due to the slow-over rate and they have a point percentage of 49.07 after three series.

South Africa are at number four on the points table below Sri Lanka, Australia, and Pakistan with a better point percentage than them. This was their first Test series and they have a point percentage of 66.66 with 2 wins in 3 matches.

The top two teams will qualify for the final of WTC at the end of the cycle. India and New Zealand were the finalists in the last tournament, and the Kiwis emerged as the winner.

With the introduction of the new rule, the number of Test wins and series victories don't determine the standings but the percentage of points won (PCT) does.

Each team is scheduled to play six series - three home and three away - but because the number of Tests in those series varies for each team, ICC came up with the PCT.

A Test win gives a team 12 points, a tie will add 6 points, and a draw shares four points between both the teams.
