South Africa were chasing a target of 305 runs in the first Test when India bowled them out on 191 runs. A day in the Test match was lost due to rain, but Indian bowlers still ensured they produce a result by getting South Africa out cheaply in both innings.

On Day 5, South Africa started their innings with an overnight score of 94/4. Skipper Dean Elgar was soon dismissed on 77 runs, and then it was a matter of time before the Indian bowlers dismantled South Africa's batting line-up.
