Former India head coach Ravi Shastri is backing the Virat Kohli-led team to be competitive in the three-match Test series against South Africa. India haven't succeeded in beating South Africa in a Test series while facing them in their own backyard till now.
Shastri understands that taking down South Africa won't be easy in their home, but he is confident of India's firepower to put on a fight. When India last toured to South Africa in 2018, they had lost the series 2-1.
"There couldn't have been a better time for Team India to prove their mettle. Virat (Kohli) has been an impeccable leader and has got a talented team to go along with it," Shastri said while speaking to 'Star Sports' about the upcoming Test series.
"South Africa remains an unconquered bastion. Remember, the Proteas are no pushovers in their own backyard, but we have got the firepower and the arsenal to match that. As always, Team India will always have my backing," he added.
India first won a Test match in South Africa under the captaincy of Rahul Dravid, who is the current Team India head coach. They have won only three Test matches in South Africa overall.
