Roger Binny’s tenure as the BCCI president is set to end in July this year, with the former India all-rounder turning 70 next month. A person ceases to be an office-bearer upon reaching the age of 70, as per the BCCI constitution.
According to a report published in CNN-News18, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla is expected to take charge as interim president for three months before the Annual General Meeting scheduled for September.
During the AGM, Shukla can stand for a full term as BCCI president, the report further stated.
Binny, a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning squad, will celebrate his 70th birthday on July 19. He was appointed unopposed to the post in 2022, taking over from former India skipper Sourav Ganguly.
Binny played an instrumental role in India’s historic maiden World Cup triumph in 1983, finishing as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 18 scalps. He represented India in 27 Tests and 72 ODIs between 1979 and 1987, taking a total of 124 wickets besides scoring 1,459 runs.
During his stint as BCCI president, the Indian men’s cricket team won two ICC titles -- the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. The Women’s Premier League (WPL) was also introduced in his tenure.
Moreover, it became mandatory during his reign for Indian cricketers to feature in domestic cricket when not on national duty. Players like Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were snubbed from the board’s annual contracts list last year for not following these instructions.
Earlier this year, Devajit Saikia was appointed BCCI secretary after Jay Shah took over as the ICC chairman.
