IND v SL 2023: Gambhir says unfair to compare eras of Tendulkar and Kohli in ODIs since 'rules have changed'

Kohli hit his 45th ODI ton recently, moving closer to Tendulkar's record of 49 centuries in format.

Virat Kohli celebrated his 45th ODI century | BCCIFormer India opener Gautam Gambhir has said that Virat Kohli has repeatedly proved that he is a master in ODI cricket after the former captain scored his 45th ton in the format against Sri Lanka in the 1st ODI of the three-match series at Guwahati on January 10.

Kohli slammed 113 runs as India posted a huge total of 373/7 in 50 overs with Rohit Sharma contributing 83 and Shubman Gill making 70 runs. In reply, Dasun Shanaka made 108*, but Sri Lanka could only make 306/8 and lost by 67 runs.

This was Kohli's third century in three ODIs in Guwahati, two at the Barsapara Stadium and one at the Nehru Stadium. He is now four short of Sachin Tendulkar's all-time record of 49 hundreds in the 50-over format.

IND v SL 2023: "Virat took the opportunity with both hands"- Gambhir says Rohit missed golden chance for a double ton

"It's not about the record, honestly. Virat Kohli will go on to get many more centuries than Sachin Tendulkar in the 50-overs format. See, the rules have changed. You should not compare eras. It's not fair to compare eras as well where there was one new ball as compared to now when there are 2 new balls with five fielders inside. But yes, he has been a master in this format and he has shown it over such a long period of time," Gambhir said on the Cricket Show on Star Sports.

Virat Kohli is second on the list for most international hundreds, with 73 tons to his name behind Sachin Tendulkar’s 100.
