Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar lashed out at Sanju Samson for his poor shot selection after the Kerala star failed to deliver with the bat during Team India’s 2-run win over Sri Lanka in the first T20I at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday (January 3).
Fan favorite Samson was included in India's playing XI for the first time since August 2022 in the T20Is, but he failed to make the most of the opportunity, as he was dismissed for just 5 runs while playing a shot that was not needed in the situation India was against Sri Lanka at that time.
Samson had previously been dropped into the deep, but he repeated the same error and fell into the trap on the very next delivery in the first T20I on Tuesday.
After Samson was caught out after scoring only five runs in the first match against Sri Lanka, Sunil Gavaskar said that the right-hander has all the talent, but his shot selection put him down.
Sunil Gavaskar said on air: “And this time, it’s the leading edge going to short third man. He is such a fine player. Sanju Samson has so much of talent but his shot selection sometimes lets him down. And this is one more occasion where it has disappointed.”
Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir also said that Samson should now grab his chances after he dropped a simple catch of Pathum Nissanka in the first T20I at Wankhede Stadium.
Gambhir said on the Cricket Live Show: “We all talk about how much talent he has but he needs to capitalize on these chances.”
