Hardik Pandya's first T20I game as captain at home ended on a winning note as India defeated Sri Lanka by 2 runs in a thrilling game on Tuesday (January 3) at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Sri Lanka opted to bowl first after winning the toss and restricted India to 162/5, that too only due to the brilliance of Deepak Hooda (41*) and Akshar Patel (31*) who added an unbroken partnership of 68 in 35 balls for the sixth wicket.

In reply, Sri Lanka kept losing wickets at regular intervals in front of some hostile bowling by Hardik Pandya, Shivam Mavi, Harshal Patel and Umran Malik, who exploited the conditions to perfection.

Skipper Dasun Shanaka (45) looked dangerous and seemed set to take the game away from India, when Umran dismissed him with a delivery clocked at 155 kmph - arguably the fastest ball recorded by an Indian seamer in international cricket.

The speedster had earlier dismissed Charith Asalanka and finished with 2/27 in his 4 overs, while debutant Shivam Mavi picked 4/22. Sri Lanka needed 13 to win in the final over, but Akshar Patel conceded just 10 to seal a 2-run win for India.

The second T20I of the three-match series will be played on Thursday in Pune.
