When Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin got 6-41 against Australia in the recently concluded Bengaluru Test, he took his wickets tally in Tests to a staggering 269 wickets in just 47 Tests - overtaking Bishan Singh Bedi to become the fifth highest wicket-taker for India in Tests.

This is a sensational achievement considering Ashwin is still has a young career. If he can maintain some of his recent form in the next half of his career, he is certain to end up as one of the highest wicket-takers in Test history.

Here, we look at the top five highest wicket-takers for India in Tests.

5. 269 - Ravichandran Ashwin

269 Test wickets in just 47 Tests is a phenomenal feat by R. Ashwin. One can only wonder where Ashwin will stand after he has completed 100 Tests and if he manages to maintain half of his current form. He also has 25 five-wicket hauls in his kitty already. However, the fact that only 67 of his 269 wickets have come outside Asia. The lanky off spinner needs to improve his effectiveness overseas, if he has to be considered an all time great in the future.

However the way he is going at present, he appears to be unstoppable. Ashwin's best was 7-59 against New Zealand in Indore recently. One can be rest assured that more stunning performances will come from the fingers of this already brilliant bowler. 

4. 311 - Zaheer Khan

Regular injuries hindered his career, else Zaheer Khan may well have ended up with more than 500 Test wickets. Regardless, the left-arm seamer will still go down as one of India's best ever fast bowler. His swing, seam and cutters were a delight to watch and he was a real menace with the old ball. A master of reverse swing, Zaheer Khan bowled nagging lines and was constantly at the throat of the batsmen. In the 92 Tests he played, Zaheer bagged 311 wickets at an average of 32.94 with 11 five-wicket hauls. His best was 7-87 against Bangladesh in Dhaka on January 2010.

3. 417 - Harbhajan Singh

Although he doesn't find a place in the national side any longer, the 'Turbanator' Harbhajan Singh has been a fine servant of Indian cricket. He has helped India to many great victories through his spirited spin bowling. In 103 Tests, Harbhajan captured 417 wickets at an average of 32.46. He also got 25 five-wicket hauls - the third highest in Indian cricket. His best was the sensational 8-84 against Australia in the historic Chennai Test of 2001 series.

2. 434 - Kapil Dev

India's best ever seam bowler ever, Kapil Dev took 434 wickets in 131 Tests. He held the world record for most wickets until West Indian Courtney Walsh overtook him in 2000. Known as the "Haryana Hurricane", he also picked up 23 five-wicket hauls in his Test career. 

Kapil Dev was like a breath of fresh air in Indian cricket, as it had not produced a quality fast bowler since the days of Amar Singh and Mohd. Nissar. Kapil's best was that incredible 9-83 against West Indies in the Ahmedabad Test in 1983. With his swing and seam, Kapil troubled many great batsmen all around the globe and in his prime, was the best swing bowler that the world had ever seen.

1. 619 - Anil Kumble

Leg spinner Anil Kumble was India's champion bowler for more than a decade, someone who along with Shane Warne resurrected the art of leg spin in international cricket. In 132 Tests for India, Kumble captured 619 wickets at an average of 29.65 with 35 five-wicket hauls to go with it. He was almost unplayable on sub-continental surfaces and made life difficult for countless batsmen in his heydays. His best bowling came against Pakistan, where he took the record-breaking 10-74 at Delhi in February 1999. He became only the second bowler to grab all 10 wickets in an innings, after England's Jim Laker.
