India’s talented wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has been overlooked again and again by the national selectors despite doing well in limited opportunities with Team India.
Even when the Indian team arrived in Thiruvananthapuram for the T20I series opener against South Africa, there were a lot of chants of Sanju, Sanju, as fans were expressing displeasure over the Kerala star’s omission for the home series and T20 World Cup 2022.
Well, on Wednesday, September 28, BCCI President Sourav Ganguly hinted at Samson’s inclusion in India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, starting on October 6, as the national selection committee is all set to announce the squad soon.
As reported by Firstpost, Ganguly told journalists: “He [Samson] is playing well. He is there, and he played for India. He just missed the World Cup. I’m sure he will be in the thick of things. I think he is playing the One-Days against South Africa also. He is around. He does well for his franchise in the IPL [Rajasthan Royals]. He is the captain. He has done very well for himself.”
He added, “I believe he is from Trivandrum. You [Trivandrum] have a lot of good players. Rohan Kunnummal got three centuries during the last Ranji Trophy. There’s a lot of talent in this part. Basil Thampi is also from here. So, a lot of talents in Kerala. It is no more a football-only state.”
Notably, Samson has so far played 16 T20Is and 7 ODIs for India and scored 296 and 176 runs respectively. He last played for India on the West Indies tour in August 2022.
