‘I would have stopped Rishabh Pant from becoming captain’: former India selector Madan Lal

Pant led the national side for the first time during the T20I series against South Africa.

Under Pant, the hosts lost the first two T20Is before bouncing back to win the next two games. The decider got abandoned due to rain in Bangalore and the five-match series was shared 2-2.

Despite India’s comeback in the series, former BCCI selector and India coach Madan Lal opined that he wouldn’t have given the captaincy to Rishabh Pant as he is still a youngster and will mature with time.

"I would have stopped him from becoming captain. Wouldn't have allowed it. Because such a player needs to be given this responsibility later. Becoming an India captain is a big deal. He is a youngster. He isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The longer he plays, he will gain more maturity," Madan Lal said on Sports Tak.

Pant’s performance with the bat also came under the scanner as he could manage only 58 runs in the T20I series at an average of 14.50.

Madan Lal cited the examples of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli to put forward his point that Pant needed to show maturity as a batter before being considered for captaincy.

"Over the next two years, if he can take his game to the next level, then he can be a good captain, can deal with things maturely. This is a player of a different nature. MS Dhoni was a quiet and cool captain, which suited him as captain. Virat Kohli is a brilliant batter. I’m not saying Pant shouldn't be swinging his bat but if he can play with a little more maturity, it would be great," he added.

Rishabh Pant will be next seen in action in the rescheduled fifth Test against England, slated to be held at Edgbaston from July 1.
