Shreyas Iyer has insisted that he isn’t thinking of cementing a place in the Indian Test team as he just wants to make the most of the opportunities he gets after a dream debut Test series against New Zealand.
Iyer finished the recently concluded two-match Test series as the second-highest run-getter, scoring 202 runs at an impressive average of 50.50, including a century and fifty against New Zealand.
Iyer scored a century (105) and 65 on his Test debut in Kanpur in the first match and his performance has certainly made things difficult for seniors like Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara, who are currently out of form at the bat in the longest format of the game.
Speaking after the final Test in Mumbai, Iyer said: “I'm not thinking of cementing a place. We've got so much competition and players in good form; I just want to do well when I get an opportunity.”
On India head coach Rahul Dravid, the right-hander said: “Dravid gives you confidence, we started off at India A. We've gelled really well; his work ethic and player management skills are amazing. It's great to chat with him even outside the field.”
Meanwhile, Indian players will get a much-needed break after the departure of the side was postponed by one week for the South Africa tour, and Iyer said they look forward to it before heading to the rainbow nation for the three-match Test and ODI series, starting on December 17.
India will be aiming to win their maiden Test series in South Africa this time after winning the Test series in Australia and taking an unassailable 2-1 lead in England this year.
He signed off by saying, “We've got a five-day break, look forward to making one.”
