Australia suffered a narrow six-run defeat at the hands of India in the fifth and final T20I at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Sunday (December 3).
Chasing 161 to win, the visitors managed 154/8 in their allotted 20 overs. Travis Head (28 off 18), Ben McDermott (54 off 36) and Matthew Wade (22 off 15) played impactful knocks but they failed to take Australia home.
In the last over, the Aussies needed 10 runs against Arshdeep Singh but the left-arm pacer conceded only three and also picked up the prized scalp of Wade.
Australia were also at the receiving end of an umpiring howler in the last over. Arshdeep’s first delivery sailed over Wade's head and it should have been called a no-ball but the umpire considered it a legal delivery.
After the game, skipper Matthew Wade expressed his disappointment on not being able to get over the finishing line.
"It's hard to wrap my head around at the moment after not being able to get us home," Wade said at the post-match presentation.
"I thought we bowled relatively well. We kept them to a total that probably should have been chased at this ground. It’s pretty disappointing. It would have been nice to get the result tonight. I think 3-2 would have been a reflection of where the series was at."
During the chase, the tourists were reeling at 129/7 after 16.4 overs but Wade took the game to the last over with his brilliant cameo.
The Australian captain batted lower down the order throughout the series despite being in good form. However, he justified the decision by pointing out his role in the side.
"There's always a temptation [to move up the order]; it was spoken about but looking forward to the World Cup. My job is to get us home in situations like tonight. It would've been nice to get the result, but we learn and I thought Ben McDermott bounced back, Behrendorff, Dwarshuis, Sangha made an impact in tough conditions," Wade added.
