With less than 10 days remaining for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Australia pacer Mitchell Starc on Tuesday (September 26) said that he and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell are nearing full match fitness.
Starc and Maxwell, who have been recovering from injuries, didn’t feature in the first two games of the ongoing three-ODI series against India. However, the duo participated in the team's training session for the third ODI in Rajkot scheduled for Wednesday (September 27).
"It's on track," Starc updated about his recovery on the eve of the series finale.
The left-arm fast bowler sustained a shoulder injury in this year's Ashes, followed by a groin injury.
"The goal is to play tomorrow but that will depend how today goes," he said. "The priority being the World Cup, and not compromising on that."
Earlier this month, Maxwell had to fly back home after hurting his ankle during a training session in Durban ahead of Australia's three-match T20I series against South Africa.
Maxwell had a good hit in the nets on Tuesday and Starc called the former an X-factor for Australia in the upcoming World Cup.
"He is on track as well, but I am not sure (about) his particular timeline, but no doubt he will be looking to make an impact as soon as he gets his chance," said Starc.
"He has got a wealth of experience over here through the IPL (Indian Premier League), through multiple tours. He is certainly an X-factor no matter which team he plays."
Having lost the first two ODIs to India, Australia have already conceded the series. The five-time World Cup winners also suffered a 3-2 defeat in their recent ODI series against South Africa.
However, Starc said they still have three matches left to fine-tune their preparations before the World Cup opener against India at Chepauk on October 8.
"It's been somewhat of a different lead-up with the South African tour, the three-match series here and the two warm-up games," he said.
