India opener Shubman Gill continued his brilliance in ODI cricket as he slammed his 6th century in the 50-over format against Australia at Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore on Sunday (September 24).
Opening the innings, Gill slammed 104 off 97 balls and stitched a 200-run stand for the second wicket with Shreyas Iyer (105 off 90 balls). Later, Suryakumar Yadav (72* off 37) and stand-in skipper KL Rahul (52 off 48) smashed dazzling half-centuries to propel the hosts to a gigantic 399/5 in 50 overs.
Defending the total, India’s spin duo of R Ashwin (3-41) and Ravindra Jadeja (3-42) ran through the Aussie batting line-up, claiming three wickets each to help India bundle out the visitors for 217 in 28.2 overs.
After India’s crushing 99-run victory in Indore, Shubman Gill said it felt good to get a century and he was glad the Indian team was finding momentum at the right time.
“It feels good. Satisfied as a team, we have the momentum at the right time,” Gill said after the match.
The lanky right-hander started cautiously, hitting his first 9 runs in 19 balls. He picked up pace later and notched up his three-figure mark in 92 balls.
Speaking on the same line, Gill said: “It depends on the situation, there's definitely some confidence. I can cover up later, and that confidence is because I am scoring at the moment.”
“With the way KL and Surya played, they kept the momentum going. A target of 400 was going to be difficult on any surface, and the bowlers came out and did their job,” he added.
When asked by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar to pick his favourite shot during this knock, Gill replied: “I think the six against Green down the ground, it was really special for me.”
With this victory, India took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. The third and final ODI will be held in Rajkot on Wednesday (September 27).
