KL Rahul is captaining India in the first two ODIs against Australia in the three-match ODI series. He started well in the first match which is being played in Mohali on September 22, 2023, as he won the toss and chose to field first.
Mohammad Shami gave India a good start by having Mitchell Marsh caught in the slips for 4 runs in the first over itself. But then David Warner (52) and Steve Smith (41) added 94 runs for the second wicket before Ravindra Jadeja removed Warner.
Then Shami came back for a second spell and bowled Steve Smith, just when he was looking set for a big one. India could have had another wicket shortly but KL Rahul missed the easy run out of Marnus Labuschagne.
On the first ball of the 23rd over, Marnus Labuschagne played a gentle drive off Ravindra Jadeja towards the short cover region, where Suryakumar Yadav mis-fielded. Labuschagne then set off for a run without Cameron Green giving any response.
As Marnus turned around to get back into his crease, Suryakumar recovered and fired the ball to KL Rahul. However, Rahul, who is keeping wickets, failed to collect the ball to complete a simple run out. This gave Marnus Labuschagne a life, which shouldn’t have happened.
