Manoj Tiwary, a former Indian cricketer, stated that Shubman Gill would improve as a captain the more series he leads. He added that while he isn't yet a "born leader," he will undoubtedly develop with experience.
Midway through 2025, the team management made the audacious decision to assign Gill as India's ODI captain. The appointment came with a great deal of responsibility because he was expected to continue a prosperous period in Indian cricket and succeed a leader of Rohit Sharma's caliber.
In the ODI series against Afghanistan, Gill set a good example, leading India to a complete 3-0 whitewash and scoring the most runs in the three games.
“This series went well for him as captain. The more series he captains, the better he will get. He isn’t a ‘born leader’ yet, but he will learn. Everything comes naturally to a born leader, and then there is someone like Shubman Gill who learns with time, and that is why Rohit and Virat and even KL need to stay in the team and advise him," Tiwary said while speaking on Cricbuzz.
“The mistakes that they made during their captaincy, they will not let him repeat them. Also, when you have so many good players, the pressure of captaincy reduces a bit," Tiwary added.
Shubman Gill was awarded the Player of the Series award for his 84* and 154 knocks in the first two ODIs against Afghanistan. His next challenge will be leading India in England for the first time in ODIs, in a three-match series that begins on July 14.
