IND v AFG 2026: India's squads for Afghanistan Test, ODIs to be announced next week; Bumrah likely to be rested - Report

India will host Afghanistan in one-off Test and three ODIs next week.

Team India | GettyIndia will host Afghanistan for a one-off Test match at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh from June 6-10.

The BCCI selectors are scheduled to announce the squad for this Test and a following three-match ODI series on May 19, TOI reported on Thursday (May 14).

According to the report, Shubman Gill is likely to lead a strong batting unit for the solitary fixture while a decision on the bowling attack will be taken closer to the selection day.

The report, however, claims that No.1-ranked Test bowler Jasprit Bumrah is expected to be rested for the Afghanistan Test which isn’t part of the ongoing WTC 2025-27 cycle.

Bumrah’s absence might open the doors for several fresh faces. Among the hopefuls is 25-year-old Punjab fast bowler Gurnoor Brar, who has “impressed the selectors with his ability to consistently hit the good areas, at pace and with sharp movement."

As per the report, India's ODI selection will likely maintain continuity, but a major decision is expected regarding the second wicketkeeper, with Ishan Kishan emerging as a strong contender to replace Rishabh Pant, who has been in inconsistent form in the IPL.

KL Rahul will continue to enjoy strong backing from the team management as a first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in ODIs, with his experience considered invaluable for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa.

Ravindra Jadeja's position as India's premier spin-bowling all-rounder is under severe scrutiny due to underwhelming ODI performances and low batting intent. The report suggests selectors might consider Axar Patel or some other option, but a discussion is due to happen regarding this slot.

Moreover, informal discussions regarding the World Test Championship, the new T20I cycle, and the 50-over World Cup are underway, with crucial decisions expected soon. It remains to be seen if announcements will coincide with the upcoming selector meetings to pick squads for Afghanistan Tests and ODIs or they will be delayed.
