Team India’s defeat in the second T20I against England in Manchester was determined by an expensive over each from Ravi Bishnoi and Arshdeep Singh, according to former India player Aakash Chopra. He noted that when England required 58 runs off 28 balls, the game was all but in India's hands.
India batted first after Shreyas Iyer won the toss. Ishan Kishan top-scored with 49, while Abhishek Sharma made 43 and captain Shreyas Iyer made 37 runs as India posted 190/7 in 20 overs.
In response, Jacob Bethell’s 76* led the chase for England, despite losing both openers for a duck in the first over. Harry Brook and Tom Banton supported with 39 runs each as England won the game in the 19th over to go 1-0 up in the series with 3 matches to go.
Aakash Chopra noted that Arshdeep's and Bishnoi's expensive overs altered the course of the game.
"56 runs in two overs, 27 in Arshdeep's and 29 in Ravi Bishnoi's, and the match finished there because you didn't have 225 to defend. What you had was getting defended. In fact, 58 runs were required in 28 balls at one stage. The match was in India's grasp, but after that, Jacob Bethell, that Ravi Bishnoi over, and the game got over," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Chopra added that India hasn't won a T20I since their T20 World Cup 2026 triumph.
"We were not losing a single match before we won the World Cup, and now we are not winning a single match. We have lost three consecutive games, and one match got washed out. We are still waiting for our first win after the World Cup," he noted.
India had come into this England T20I series after losing 0-2 to Ireland in Dublin. The first T20I between England and India was abandoned due to rain in Chester-le-Street.
The importance of the 16th and 17th overs in both innings was emphasized by Aakash Chopra. He pointed out that England scored 30 runs more than India in those two overs.
"I will talk about two overs. In my opinion, our 16th and 17th overs and their 16th and 17th overs were very important. Small stories are always hidden in a big story. Only nine runs came in their 16th and 17th overs. Sam Curran gave only two runs in the 16th over and picked up a wicket. Will Jacks gave only seven runs in the 17th over," he said.
"When we bowled, Varun Chakaravarthy gave 10 runs in the 16th over, although a wicket fell in that over for sure. However, 29 runs went in the over after that. We gave 39 runs in two overs, and the opposing team gave only nine runs in the same two overs. There was a difference of 30 runs there. This is absolutely massive. A win or loss was decided there," Chopra observed.
After the left-arm seamer had taken two wickets in his opening over, Chopra continued and said that Arshdeep Singh's second over was also a game-changing moment.
"Apart from that, there was another over, which was the third over because the start was excellent. Arshdeep Singh had given an incredible start. He had said "tata" and "bye-bye" to both openers, but 27 runs went in that over. If 56 runs go in two overs, we will be way behind in the match," he elaborated.
Despite bowling a remarkable 3/40 in four overs, Arshdeep Singh was hit for 27 runs in his second over. In his four overs, Ravi Bishnoi gave up 60 runs, including 29 in the 17th over of England's innings, while remaining wicketless.
