ENG v IND 2022: “It could have been a great opportunity” - Suryakumar Yadav on not taking India over the finishing line

Yadav's 117-run knock helped India to 198 while chasing 216 to win.

Suryakumar Yadav | GettyThough he became the toast of the nation after his superlative century against England, Suryakumar Yadav has admitted that not taking India past the finishing line will ‘keep on playing in his mind', as India lost the 3rd T20I in Nottingham by 17 runs while chasing 216 to win.

Suryakumar Yadav rescued the Indian side after it had slipped to 31/3 and added 119 runs with Shreyas Iyer (28) to keep India in the hunt. In meantime, he scored 117 runs with 14 fours and 6 sixes, but the asking rate got too much even for him, as he perished in the penultimate over, despite hitting Moeen Ali for couple of boundaries and a six.

Suryakumar admitted during a post-match interview that in his mind, he made a calculation error and is disappointed with it.

ENG v IND 2022: “One of the best hundreds I've seen” Jos Buttler on Suryakumar’s century

"I made a calculation error. I did not know whose over was left, but when I saw Moeen Ali bowling, I thought we could bring the game back for India. I knew that if it was in my range, I would hit it straight and if the ball was even remotely outside, I would get boundaries and inch closer to the target until the last over. But it couldn't work out and I'm disappointed with it because the opportunity was there to win the match. It could have been an even bigger knock but great learning process," he told Sony Sports Network after the match.

"It could have been a great opportunity. Had I scored 10 runs in the last 2 balls, the pressure in the last over would have been on the other team. It will keep playing in my mind until I sleep, but tomorrow will be a fresh day," he added.

Suryakumar Yadav will now be seen in the three-match ODI series between India and England which begins from July 12 onwards.
