On day 1 of the rescheduled fifth Test in Edgbaston against England, Indian opener Shubman Gill got dismissed early on despite setting himself up for a long haul, disappointing former India head coach Ravi Shastri. James Anderson dismissed Shubman for 17 as he edged one to the slips following a solid start.
Although Gill has previously produced played quite a few important knocks for the team, he has not yet reached a Test century. Shastri is not pleased with the fact that he frequently lost his wicket after getting set.
Shastri made a suggestion during his commentary of the game on Sky Sports that the hitter needed to improve his batting discipline and give himself more time in the middle to score runs.
"That's unfortunate. He (Shubman Gill) is a class act. He needs to bring that discipline into his game. That's a nothing shot and he will be disappointed with it. This is a boundary-scoring ground but you need to put value on your wicket. You have to stick there and runs will come eventually," Shastri said on air.
The former India head coach added that Gill would be disappointed in himself because he had worked so hard to establish himself.
"Yeah, he will be mighty disappointed. When he is set, he makes runs come. Everything before this, there was the intent. There was no intent here. It was just a tentative poke outside the off stump. Really a nothing-shot. He will be very disappointed with this because he had done a little bit of hard work. This is a boundary-scoring ground, Edgbaston. Stay at the crease, you will get runs. There is value for your shots," added Shastri.
James Anderson gave India a second blow, dismissing the other opener Cheteshwar Pujara with a short-of-good length delivery on the offside, which the India batter edged to the slips.
