England opener Haseeb Hameed was seen taking guard too far from the crease during the first day's play at The Oval. India captain Virat Kohli was not happy with Hameed taking guard near the danger area.

Kohli approached the on-field umpire and complained about the same. At the Headingley Test, India wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant was asked to change his stance due to a similar reason.

Going by the cricket laws, a batsman can't take guard close to the protected area, which is 5 feet from the crease. As per Law 41 – Unfair play, the striker cannot mark the guard or take a stance in the protected area or so close to the protected area that frequent encroachment is inevitable.

The renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle read the law on air and said the batsman usually mark the guard near the crease. Ex-India cricketer and Harsha's co-commentator, Ajay Jadeja joined him and said, "Yead you do (on marking guard near the crease) because that's where the batsman generally standing. I think Rishabh Pant is an odd one and here Haseeb tried to make a mark and stand way down the pitch to cut the swing."

Hameed was soon dismissed by the Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah on a 12-ball duck. England ended the first day's play with 53/3 on the scoreboard after bowling out India on 191 runs.
