ENG v IND 2021: Michael Vaughan questions England's tactic at Lord's; wanted coach Silverwood to step in

England tried to bounce out Bumrah and Shami on Day 5 of Lord's Test match.

England lost the Lord's Test match by 151 runs | GettyEven though Team India were down and out and were on the verge of a defeat, hosts decided to go for the short ball tactic against India tail-enders Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah for which the team received a lot of flak after losing the game.

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan, who was not particularly impressed with England’s performance, wanted to see an input from the coach but was disappointed to see Chris Silverwood doing nothing.

Plenty has been written and said about how England lost the plot in attempting to bounce out Jasprit Bumrah, and Joe Root was undeniably let down by some of his senior players who should have intervened with him sooner, but I also wanted to see something from the coach, Vaughan wrote in a Facebook post.

Why was Silverwood not sending someone out onto the pitch with a drink, asking Root what the hell was going on and getting him to change tactics? I know that is what Duncan Fletcher would have done with me had I suffered a brain-fade on the field,” he added.

The Englishman then expressed that he wants coach Silverwood to take the responsibility of this blunder in Lord’s Test and show everyone that he can change England’s momentum in this series.

This was the big moment in the second Test and England blew it, and Silverwood has to take his share of responsibility for that.

He (Chris Silverwood) has to show that he is capable of changing England's momentum in this series, because at the moment it is only going one way and that is in the direction of Virat Kohli, who has his hosts right where he wants them - hot under the collar, not thinking straight and making silly mistakes,” Vaughan signed off.

England’s tactical blunder on Day 5 of the second Test match against India at the iconic Lord’s proved to be the turning point for the tourists as they registered a fantastic 151 run win and went 1-0 up in this five-match series.
