Nashra Sandhu became part of a rare and unfortunate moment in cricket history during Pakistan’s Women's World Cup 2025 opener against Bangladesh in Colombo on Thursday (October 2).
Sandhu was out hit-wicket, making her the first Pakistani woman and only the second player overall to be dismissed in this fashion in the Women’s World Cup history.
The only other instance dates back to 1973 when Lynette Smith, playing for the International XI Women against Trinidad & Tobago Women, was dismissed hit-wicket.
Sandhu’s dismissal also placed her alongside Pakistan’s male cricketers Misbah-ul-Haq and Imam-ul-Haq, both of whom have suffered hit-wicket dismissals in ODI World Cups. While Misbah fell to Ireland pacer Alex Cusack in 2015 at the Adelaide Oval, Imam was dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman at Lord’s in 2019.
Coming to Sandhu’s dismissal, the incident unfolded when Pakistan’s innings was already in tatters at eight down. Facing Shorna Akter, she attempted to play a gentle poke at a delivery outside off stump but failed to make contact with the ball. In an unfortunate turn of events, her follow-through disturbed the stumps, causing the rare hit-wicket.
Here’s the video:
Nashra Sandhu’s wicket reduced Pakistan to 115/9 while their innings eventually folded for 129 in 38.3 overs. It was a listless batting performance as no one managed to touch the 30-run mark. Rameen Shamim was the top scorer with 23 runs to her name.
Bangladesh bowlers dominated, with Shorna Akter taking 3 wickets for 5 runs and Nahida Akter returning with the figures of 2 for 19.
